NEWBURGH NEWS March 2017

Dear Resident
It already seems a long time since the last newsletter and the celebrations of the festive season. In January, Reg and Shirley Porter left the village which left us with a Councillor vacancy.  You will have received a leaflet giving information about being a Councillor and I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage you to think seriously about getting involved with our work.
After discussion about filling Shirley’s role as village assistant (and taking into account changes in grass cutting arrangements etc) we are undertaking a review of the whole area of work.  This will involve producing an up-to-date definition of the role and will also look at whether we can involve volunteers in fulfilling any of the duties.  As an interim measure, Councillors are litter picking their leaflet delivery areas and also reporting any problems to Sandra, our Parish Clerk.
This summer will see the 40th anniversary of Newburgh Fair and we are confident that the anniversary will be celebrated in style!  As always, volunteers are key to the success of this popular village event, so come and join us!
Kind Regards
Jacky Citarella

The Gift Day we had last year to help towards our Parish Share arrears was a great success as we raised just over £7000, which has not solved the problem, but it is a wonderful start. (There is still about £35,000 to go!) Many thanks to all who contributed.

If anyone in the village would like to contribute to the running of the Church, please contact me on 01257 464833 and I will happily let you have a standing order authority and a Gift Aid form.

Good Neighbour Gardening
Concern has been raised about problems navigating some pavements in the village due to overgrowth of plants from gardens.  Now that spring is on the horizon, please can you check that nothing from your garden (both new growth and established plants) is causing an obstruction which may pose problems for users, especially those with prams and wheelchairs.  Thank you.

Newburgh School
Newburgh School continues to go from strength to strength. I told you in my last letter that we received a letter from Nick Gibb, Member of State for School Standards to say our school was in the top 3% of the country, in February we received another to say we are in the top 1% in the country. Superb accolades as I am sure everyone would agree and yes we are very proud but we pride ourselves on not letting these things be our total focus. The whole child is what is important at Newburgh, that they are happy and enjoying their primary education and that we continue to make it creative and fun is paramount.

The second half of the spring term sees us having reading challenges in school to raise parents awareness of how important reading is – it’s the key to most learning. This has got off to a great start and the aim is to continue this until the end of this year. In the summer term we plan to have an art exhibition in school and all are welcome to come and view this, look out for the posters advertising this.
God Bless
